At least 52 people were killed and more than 50 were injured in a suicide attack on a religious gathering in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan region on Friday, according to health officials and police.

The blast comes amid a spike in attacks claimed by terrorist groups in the country’s west, boosting the stakes for security authorities ahead of national elections due in January next year.

“The bomber detonated himself near the vehicle of the Deputy Superintendent of Police,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Munir Ahmed told Reuters, adding that the explosion occurred near a mosque where people were gathered for a parade to commemorate Mohammad’s birthday, which is a public holiday.

The injured were being treated by hospitals in Mastung, a neighbouring town. The detonation was described as a “very heinous act” by Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti.

More than 40 people were killed in a suicide explosion at a religious political party rally in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in July.
