After leaving her walker on the ground and conducting a tandem leap in northern Illinois, a 104-year-old Chicago lady hope to be certified as the oldest person to ever skydive.

“Age is just a number,” Dorothy Hoffner told a roaring crowd at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, roughly 140 km southwest of Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson, 103, of Sweden, set the Guinness World Record for the oldest skydiver in May 2022. However, Skydive Chicago is attempting to have Guinness World Records verify Hoffner’s jump as a record, according to WLS-TV.

Hoffner made her first skydiving when she was 100 years old. On Sunday, she left her walker near the plane — a Skyvan — and was assisted up the steps to join the others waiting inside to skydive.

“Let’s go, let’s go, Geronimo!” Hoffner stated after she had been seated.

She claimed she had to be pulled out of the plane when she first skydived. Hoffner insisted on leading the leap from 13,500 feet (4,100 metres) on Sunday, despite being attached to a US Parachute Association-certified instructor.

The dive lasted seven minutes, including the gradual drop of her parachute to the earth. The wind pulled Hoffner’s white hair back as she clung to the harness over her tiny shoulders, lifted up her legs, and lightly landed on the grassy landing place.

Friends rushed in to offer their condolences, and someone brought Hoffner’s red walker. She promptly stood up and was asked how it felt to be back on the ground.

“Wonderful,” said Hoffner. “But it was fantastic up there.” The entire experience was great, beautiful, and couldn’t have been better.”

Hoffner’s thoughts instantly shifted to the future and other obstacles following her jump. The lifelong Chicagoan, who will age 105 in December, suggested she could go on a hot-air balloon flight next.

“I’ve never been in one of those,” she said.
