You wake up in the morning with weary, puffy eyes and wonder what you can do to improve your appearance. Of course, commercial eye creams, gels, and serums are generally more effective than homemade remedies because they not only reduce the appearance of puffy eyes and dark circles but also produce a long-lasting effect by improving skin elasticity; however, they are not always available to us. When you need an instant effect that will remain for several hours, DIY cures for puffy eyes come in handy.

Cucumber Slices

Because raw cucumber is 95% water, it is commonly used as a natural skin moisturizer. It also has antioxidants that help to minimize inflammation and redness. Simply cut the cucumber into slices, lie down, and place the slices over closed eyes for at least 5-10 minutes (the longer, the better). Cold cucumber slices perform better, so chill them in the refrigerator or freezer. If you suffer from swollen eyes on a frequent basis, put some sliced cucumbers in the fridge at all times so you always have them when you need them.

Raw Potato

Cucumber slices can be replaced with raw potato slices. They keep you cool for longer and contain starch and other ingredients that help tighten the skin around your eyes. Instead of sliced potatoes, prepare a potato compress by grating raw potato, wrapping it in many layers of cheesecloth, and placing it over the eyes.


Tea (particularly low-fermented green tea) is high in antioxidants and caffeine, which help tighten and firm the skin around the eyes. Green tea also contains anti-inflammatory effects, but if you don’t have any, black tea will suffice. Chamomile tea can also help with swollen eyes. It is caffeine-free, yet it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities. Chamomile tea decreases puffiness and redness, soothes itching, and can even be used to cure conjunctivitis.

Steep two teabags in boiling water for five minutes to minimize the appearance of swollen eyes. After that, remove the teabags from the water, place them in a plastic bag, and chill them in the refrigerator or freezer. Squeeze the excess water from the teabags, lie down, and apply the teabags to your closed eyelids for around 15 minutes. If you don’t have time, skip the freezing step, but make sure the teabags aren’t hot before placing them on your eyes.


Milk is an excellent treatment for itchy and swollen eyes. It contains lactic acid, which has a whitening effect on the skin and so aids in the reduction of dark circles under the eyes. Soak two cotton balls or pads in cooled milk, wring off the excess moisture, and place them on your eyes. When they become warm, replace them. You can keep going until you get the desired result.


If your fridge and pantry are bare, and you don’t even have a couple of teabags to spare, a simple cold compress may be of assistance. To minimize puffiness, put an ice pack or a bag of frozen veggies to your closed eyes. Before applying the compress, cover it in a clean towel to prevent injury to your skin. Chilled spoons are an excellent substitute for an ice pack. Place two spoons in the freezer or in an ice-filled cup. When they are sufficiently cooled, place the back of each spoon on your eyelid or beneath your eye and apply mild pressure. When the spoon becomes warm, remove it.
