11 Killed in Explosions at 2 Fire Cracker units in Tamil Nadu

VIRUDHUNAGAR: On Tuesday, two separate fire accidents claimed the lives of at least 11 workers, one in a cracker shop close to a firecracker factory in M Pudupatti and the other in a cracker unit close to Sivakasi.

Late in the day, in the cracker shop next to Kanishkar Fireworks in M Pudupatti, an explosion reportedly took place, according to the sources. Four fire engines from Virudhunagar, Sivakasi, Watrap, and Srivilliputhur responded to the call and hurried to the scene to help put out the fire. The Fire and Rescue Service officers have found eight bodies so far.

According to government sources, it is believed that the explosion happened while crackers were being tested as samples because the weather conditions over the previous few days prevented them from drying correctly. Two further personnel were treated at the Government Hospital in Srivilliputhur after suffering 20 to 25 percent burn injuries.

The individuals who were burnt to death in the explosion are being identified because the workers in the unit fled once the fire broke out. The facility has a DRO licence, according to the sources. District Fire Officer Vivekanandan, Virudhunagar S P Srinivasa Perumal, and representatives from the Revenue Department have all arrived and are conducting an investigation.

Another fire incident at Kichanayakkanpatti involved an explosion at the Arya Fireworks Factory, which resulted in the death by charring of a 60-year-old man. P Vembu, a worker from Nathikudi who is 60 years old, was mixing chemicals in one of the unit’s chambers when friction caused a fire to start. Gurumoorthy, the unit’s foreman, was detained by Maraneri Police, who are also looking for Muthuvijyan, the owner, who has fled. The facility has a Nagpur licence.

MK Stalin, the chief minister, offered his sympathies and provided a sum of three lakh rupees ($30,000) for each family of the deceased and one lakh for each injured person.
