10 Dead in Cracker Unit Explosion near Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu

TRICHY: An explosion at a rural cracker manufacturing factory in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district on Monday killed at least nine workers and injured five more.

According to sources, a private rural cracker manufacturing unit in Viragaalur hamlet near Vettriyur village produces crackers for local festivities and temple festivals.

The explosion occurred at 10 a.m., and a fire erupted.

Fire trucks from Ariyalur and Perambalur districts rushed to the scene. Five persons were seriously injured and were transported to Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital.

Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed his condolences for the catastrophe and declared a solatium of Rs 3 lakh each to the relatives of the slain victims, Rs 1 lakh each to those who were severely injured, and Rs 50,000 apiece to those who incurred minor injuries in the explosion.

According to the CM, ministers S S Sivasankar and C Ve Ganesan have been assigned to monitor the rescue efforts at the explosion site.
